When was worcester bridge built

By Anglo-Saxon times, the city of Worcester had probably acquired a bridge across the River Sever,n that ran past the town. A bridge had definitely been constructed by the late 11th century, crossing the river at the north-western corner of the walled town. Worcester Bridge was the only bridge across the Severn between Gloucester and Bridgnorth, which were around 68 miles km apart by road.

The crossing brought travelers and trade from across the region, bringing great prosperity to the town. Indeed, eventually the number of visitors began to cause problems for the local priory, who were expected to provide them with hospitality. In the early years of the 14th century, Worcester began to consider rebuilding its existing bridge. The rest of the city walls had been improved by a sequence of investments in the decades between and , which may have encouraged the city to redevelop the bridge as well.

In it was widened by adding footpaths on either side, and nearly a century later it was realised that there was a need to widen it further to allow modern traffic to cross more easily. The packed visit of the Royal visitor began by being met at the city boundary by the Mayor, High Sherriff and Lord Lieutenant.

After visiting the Cathedral the next stop was the bridge which he was asked to officially reopen. This was done by cutting a red and black ribbon with a sword said to be of the type used by the forces of Charles II during the Battle of Worcester. City officials involved in the project, presumably including Mr Carey Walker, were presented to him. After crossing the bridge HRH was taken to Cripplegate Park, which had been remodelled, and he was given a golden key to open the park gates and declare the park open.

Whilst there the Prince was met by school children and the band of the 8 th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment played for him. He also visited the Guildhall, where he dined privately, and then went to the Cinderella Works and the Metal Box company at Perry Wood. Judging from the descriptions in the official programme, the newspapers and photographs large crowds had come out for the Royal visit and as many people were officially introduced to the Prince as they could manage.

The River Severn at this point is extremely prone to flooding, at least once a year the bridge is likely to be rendered inaccessible to most vehicles, though the local bus company, First Wyvern, have contingency plans in place to provide a shuttle service from one side of the river to the other when the bridge is closed.

Obviously when flooding is too severe, not even the bus service can be operated and traffic must divert to the Carrington Bridge to the south or the Holt Bridge several miles to the north.
