Why dont solids diffuse

Yes solid diffuse but not's an easy way because the molecules in solids are tightly packed together. Diffusion does't happen in all types of solids because particles in different solids only vibrate on the spot, rather then moving from one place to other. Upvote 6. Aditya Raj Jul 28, Solid do not diffuses into one another because the particles in solid are fixed about their position and they can't leave their position as they are hold by a strong force of attraction.

Upvote 3. Kriti Warya Jul 30, This is because of diffusion , the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. This means that diffusion does not happen in solids — the particles in a solid can only vibrate and cannot move from place to place.

Upvote 1. This discussion on Why do solids not diffuse into one another? For diffusion to work, the particles must be able to move around. This means that diffusion does not happen in solids — the particles in a solid can only vibrate and cannot move from place to place. Diffusion is driven by differences in concentration. When chemical substances such as perfume are let loose in a room, their particles mix with the particles of air.

The particles of smelly gas are free to move quickly in all directions. They eventually spread through the whole room from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

This continues until the concentration of the particles of smelly gas is the same throughout the room. How does diffusion affect homeostasis? How are diffusion and osmosis different? How is diffusion involved in osmosis? How is facilitated diffusion different from active transport? Background information Diffusion in liquids: When substances dissolve in liquids like salt dissolving in water the substances spread out.

We call this spreading out of dissolved particles diffusion. The end result of this is that the solute particles that have dissolved in water will spread out evenly. This movement or spreading out is due to the fact that in liquids the particles are moving randomly. Diffusion in gases: When two or more different gases, like oxygen and nitrogen are mixed they will mix themselves evenly. We call this mixing of particles diffusion.
