Can you taser a bear

As we have established, running away and electrocuting them will not work. So, what will actually help you stop a bear? There are a few things that actually will, some work better than others. Let me explain. The obvious thing that might come to your mind, is a gun. An actual firearm of course does have a much better chance than the previously mentioned options.

But even guns do not stop bears instantly always. Something like a 9mm shot at a very close range will kill a bear but not instantly. Firing a gun is not guaranteed to stop a bear, so it is advised that you use something else that is proven to be more effective. Like wildlife deterrent horns or bear sprays.

Something like a shotgun or similarly heavy cartridge firearm will be more effective than your average handgun. Carrying heavy firearms is indeed effective, and if worse comes to worst, you might need to kill a bear with a heavy firearm to save your own life. But shooting and killing wildlife is not something that should be done unless absolutely necessary so here are other options you can use.

Bear sprays are similar to pepper sprays, designed to repel away bears. Carrying a bear spray is proven to be more effective than firearms even.

If a bear starts to approach you, you should spray the bear spray in a downward direction directed at the bear from 30 feet or less. After a few seconds adjust your spraying in response to the wind. Then take other safety measures. A direct spray is almost sure to get the bear away.

But nothing is guaranteed in such scenarios so be prepared and try to avoid attacks altogether. These are like air horns.

In November, Lewis presented the idea of using Tasers on bears to a group of wildlife mangers who deal with human-bear conflicts at a conference in Canmore, Canada. Much to his surprise, no one scoffed at the idea.

Instead, most managers appeared excited that Tasers might become another possible non-lethal tool available to managers who deal with human-bear conflicts. Lewis said he first became interested in the subject in June of when an Alaska State Trooper asked for his assistance with an ornery cow moose.

The cow moose was upset because her two calves were trapped in an open four-foot deep basement foundation at a home construction site. She would not leave the area, even when Lewis tried using noisemakers and rubber shotgun ammunition. Finally, Lewis said he tried to drop a ramp down into the pit so the calves would be able to walk out on their own.

But when he approached the calves, the cow moose charged him, jumping into the foundation, across it and back out. It then chased Lewis and the trooper three times around the patrol car. Both men were armed but rather than shooting the moose, Lewis said the trooper used his Taser to shoot at the moose across the hood of the patrol car. Stunned and immobilized, the moose hit the ground immediately. Measure ad performance. Select basic ads. Create a personalised ads profile.

Tasers can be purchased by any civilian and are a good protection tool if you are comfortable handling one. In fact, stun guns such as the Night Watchman can even be purchased online, in a variety of types and colors. Because they can be potentially lethal although these situations are typically rare , it is vital that owners of tasers exercise extreme caution when handling such a weapon.

First of all, a taser uses barbs to penetrate the skin and deliver a series of electric shock, right? Well, a bear has skin much tougher than that of an average human, making it much less likely that the barbs will even penetrate into the bear to deliver the shocks.

In addition, bears are covered with thick, coarse hair that would only further serve to protect them against the electrical barbs of a taser or stun gun. Even if you managed to do this, the bear would not become paralyzed like a human would — their muscles are much denser and overall stronger than a humans, making the effects of the taser much less powerful on the bear.

Tasing the bear would only serve to further agitate it, making it more aggressive and more dangerous.
