What is the difference between a square and an opposition

However the purpose of the quincunx is to create transformation through analyzing, adjusting and fine tuning the personality functions. The Opposition aspect may create a tug-of-war between two opposing factors, but when they can allot equal time to value both sides, you will come into a state of balance and integration. The Conjunction can go either way depending upon the planets involved. They can unify their energies to yield the strength and power of a well coordinated team, or they can compete with or ignore one another.

The keyword here is intensification. For example, Moon conjunct Saturn can be experienced as emotional Moon depth Saturn , or as an emotional inhibition, depending upon how skillfully you are expressing the energies. The Trine aspect facilitates a harmonious, creative, and easy flow between the parts of your personality. It may indicate inherit talents and abilities. The Sextile aspect presents opportunities which if acted upon can produce the talents and benefits of the trine aspect.

It should be mentioned although the sextile and trine aspects are considered easy , if you do not exert any effort or initiative, these aspects can rapidly become passive and lazy. It is usually the hard aspects with their discomfort that produces the need for change that activates the 'easy' aspects in the chart. Some conjunctions can be easy or challenging depending the nature of the planets involved and other aspects to those planets.

Sextiles are easy and denote talents that can be developed and ease of expression. Trines are easy and denote those energies which have already been developed and can cause laziness and taking for granted. They are not to be further developed so do not promote growth. Oppositions are challenging in that they are out in the open and easy to recognise.

They need to be handled and cannot really be overcome as such. Squares are inner conflicts which urge us to grow and progress because of the need for adjustment and the inner discontent they express.

However without squares we dont really get anywhere. Inconjuncts or quincunxes are aspects of chronic maladjustment and can manifest in health issues. They need to be tolerated and managed and cannot be reconciled or healed. The Sun and Moon have wider orbs of aspect than the other planets as they are the lights or luminaries but the question is one that is still debated as to how wide and for which aspects and planets.

I dont like so much the "good" and "bad" expression of the aspects. Any one can be changed to the positive and at least handled. Without challenge we do not grow and the flowing aspects are there to help us handle the more difficult aspects and are a karmic reward for efforts in the past I believe. We all have strengths and weaknesses and once we are aware we can own the aspects and handle them.

I thought I would add some more information on this thread about the inconjunct aspect, by Howard Sasportas the inner planets: Questions always come up about the interpretation of the inconjuncts or the quincunxes, so it is worth taking some time to talk about them in general.

In most cases I have found the inconjuncts to be a powerful aspect, and you should always take note of it in a chart. Before you ask I am quite liberal with the orb - I give it 5 degrees or so. I know that if you extend it that far, you'll overlap with some minor aspect, but from my experience doing charts for people and hearing what they have to say about their lives. I'm almost certain that inconjuncts work within this range. So if you have limited them to two or three degrees, you might want to look at your chart again to see if you have acquired any more inconjuncts - using the wider orb you might be able to understand something going on in your psyche or in your life.

Inconjuncts have been described as "neurotic aspects" not that they make you neurotic, although they can but because they operate erratically and in very contradictory ways. Alan Oken confirms this by describing an inconjunct as a "seesaw" type of aspect, sometimes working harmoniously for you, and sometimes causing you a greta deal of trouble. This makes sense because a quincunx occurs midway between a trine and opposition hence the alternaion between the it's trinelike expression, and it's more challenging oppositionlike effects.

At times the two planets brought together by inconjunct seem to work or combine together in a beneficial way. For instance if you have Mars inconjunct Saturn, there will be times when it will operate like a trine - you instinctively find the right balance or blend of assertion with steadiness and common sense.

However, there will be other times when this same inconjunct will function more like an opposition. An opposition means a separation concerning what the two planets in opposition represent. A square doesn't mean necessarily a separation but a it means a conflict. An opposition is a bit like Saturn, a square like Mars.

Of course you need as well to look at each of the planets, if they are in domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term or face, or in detriment, fall; and if they are in a good house or no, ect. Well, I'm not a professional and presently I am studying traditional astrology, but you will have other responses from people very instructed in this matter!

I was looking at a chart in which there is a Mercury square Pluto, and another in which there is a Saturn opposition to Neptune, and it suddenly struck me that I could say nothing useful about these. Humbling, but a good opportunity to learn!

Well, generally, traditional astrology doesn't look at Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. We only look at the 7 classical Planets. Your approach is more modern than classical, but it's ok. Here you can select some negative key-words concerning Pluto not exactly positive anyway! Mercury in square towards Pluto is seen as harsh. A deep depression is possible thoughts could be compulsive, destructive or auto-destructive. An opposition aspect can be interpreted in different ways.

How is your relationships shaped by the two planets involved. Or, how do you project your expression of the two planets upon others. Example might be Jupiter-opposite-Mars -- if a social opportunity buying, taking, approving comes along, you might aggressively pursue it. This is the 'greedy-grabber' pattern. Or, a great job opening might be contested by a rival who wants the job for themselves. How you fight for something with Mars in the first might depend upon the size Jupiter of the opposition Jupiter.

With Mars in the 10th of one's public image, status and life-goals, Jupiter might be seen in a positive light as a supportive resource that has been discovered. Negatively, it might mean a legal problem relating to your home, base or resources.

For Squares, since there are two of them, we have to take into account the 'opening' square versus the 'closing' square. Squares denote conflict, struggle, challenges, a need to express the planet within difficult circumstances. The opening square suggests a more intuitive, feeling, reactionary personal response. The closing square suggests a directed, strategic, manipulated action to achieve something or to force a changed condition.

I started understanding modalities through energies now… aspects through energies? Way more easy to understand! Ami this is really excellent way of explaining the aspects and how the energy works.
